Small scars will sometimes appear if you have had severe acne. Acne scars usually can not be completely removed successfully and are quite difficult and expensive to treat. The devastating effect caused by acne scars can harm one's psychological and emotional wellbeing resulting in low self esteem and a lack of confidence. There are a range of treatments available, however if acne scars are causing severe psychological distress, social withdrawal and/or emotional ill-health, contact your physician immediately.
Generally there are two types of acne scars:
Physical Scars
After one has suffered from acne the scars on the surface of the skin tend to cause an indentation which is referred to as physical acne scars or "icepick" scars.
Pigmented Scars
Pigmented scars is a slightly misleading term, suggesting a change in the skin's pigmentation, however this is not the case. Pigmented scars are usually the result of nodular or cystic acne (the painful 'bumps' lying under the skin), and often will leave behind an inflamed red mark. Pigmentation scars can be avoided simply by avoiding aggravation of the nodule or cyst. When sufferers try to 'pop' cysts or nodules, pigmentation scarring becomes significantly worse, and may even bruise the affected area. Pigmentation scars will often fade over time.
