Types Of Acne
The most common for of acne is Acne Vulgaris which includes several types of pimples. Blackheads, whiteheads, papules, pustules, nodules and cysts are known as acne lesions.
The following types of acne spots are recognised as acne vulgaris.
Whiteheads are formed when a pore becomes completely blocked, trapping sebum (oil), bacteria, and dead skin cells, this causes a white appearance on the surface of the skin. The life cycle of a whitehead is normally quicker than that of a blackhead.

Blackheads are formed when a pore is only partially blocked, allowing some of the trapped sebum (oil), bacteria, and dead skin cells to slowly drain to the surface. The black color is not caused by dirt but rather it is a reaction of the skin's own pigment, melanin, reacting with the oxygen in the air. Unfortunately blackheads take a long time to clear as they tend to be quite stable structures.

Red, tender bumps with no head are characterized as papules. It is not recommended that papules are squeezed as this may exacerbate scarring.

Similar to a whitehead, however a pustule is inflamed, and appears as a red circle with a white or yellow center. Pustules are the most common form of pimple. If you decide to pop or squeeze it, make sure you know how to do it correctly before you go ahead with it.

Characterised by nodules and cysts.
Nodular acne consists of acne spots which are much larger and can be extremely painful lasting for months at a time in opposition to the lesions which are previously discussed. Under the skin's surface nodules appear as large hard bumps. Never attempt to squeeze these nodules as scarring is extremely common and you may cause severe skin trauma, with lesions lasting many months longer. See a Dermatologist as they often have ways of reducing swelling and preventing scarring.
Similar to a nodule, a cyst, however can be pain painful and pus-filled, usually with a diameter of 5mm or more across. Deeper infection and inflammation may result if you squeeze a cyst causing it to last for a longer period and scarring will quite often occur. See a Dermatologist as they often have ways of reducing swelling and preventing scarring.

Severe acne can have damaging pyschological effects on those who experience it, as can any form of acne.
This type of acne is most common in males between the ages of 18 and 30 years and is the most severe form of acne vulgaris, affecting the face, chest, back, bottom, upper arms and thighs. The condition may stay active for many years. Depicted by numerous interconnected, large lesions with widespread blackheads, is can cause severe damage to the skin including disfiguring scarring. Although acne conglobata can resist treatment, through lengthy aggressive treatment it can be controlled.
Normally affecting young men, this is an abrupt onset of acne conglobata. Symptoms of severe nodulocystic, often ulcerating acne are apparent. As with acne conglobata, extreme, disfiguring scarring is common. Acne fulminans is unique in that it also includes a fever and aching of the joints and does'nt respond well to antibiotics.
Gram-Negative Folliculitis |
A rare bacterial infection, that may possibly be caused by long term antibiotic treatment of acne vulgaris which has resulted in complication. Gram-negative folliculitis is characterised by pustules and cysts. Isotretinoin, a medication for severe acne has been effective in the treatment of this disorder.
Only affecting females usually between 20 and 40 years of age. An severe abrupt facial acne characterised by large painful nodule, pustules and sores that may result in scarring. Usually lasting no longer that one year.
Acne rosacea and acne vulgaris are sometimes confused with one another, as they both appear to have similar qualities.
Unfortunately this disorder affects millions of people, usually over the age of 30 years. Women are most effected by acne rosacea, however, when found in men it is often more severe. The cheeks, nose, forehead and chin are effected by a red rash which is often accompanied by bumps, pimples, and skin blemishes. Blood vessels may also become evident on the skin's surface. If this disorder is left untreated a condition called rhinophyma, can cause growth of excess tissue and swelling of the nose. Unlike acne, rosacea has an alternative treatment so it is extremely important that you consult a doctor who can provide a proper diagnosis and treatment plan.
